ARTICLES – A, AN, THE
A. An एवं The को Article कहा जाता है. Articles के दो भेद होते हैं. Definite and Indefinite.
Definite Article (The ). The is the definite article, since points out a particular individual, group, or class.
उदाहरण- This is the umbrella I want.
Indefinite Articles- (A, An). A or AN is the indefinite article, because it refers to anly one of a group or class of things.
उदाहरण- This is a girl & This is an umbrella.
Use of A/An
A/An का प्रयोग Singular Countable Nouns के पहले होता है.
1) Singular Countable Noun किसी Consonant (व्यंजन) से शुरू होता है तो ‘a’ का प्रयोग किया जाता है. जैसेa ball, a cat, a dog.
2) यदि Singular Countable Noun किसी vowel (स्वर) जैसे- a, e, 1.0, u, से शुरू होता है तो an का प्रयोग किया जाता है, जैसे- an apple, an elephant, an inkpot.
3) यदि Singular countable Noun किसी consonant से शुरू हो मगर वह ‘स्वर’ की तरह उच्चारित हो तो भी ‘an’ का प्रयोग किया जाता है. हिन्दी में (अ, आ, इ, ई, उ, ऊ, ओ, औ आदि) को स्वर तथा शेष अक्षरों को व्यंजन कहा जाता है. जैसे- An Hour (आर) यहां ‘h’ silent है, An Honest Man (ऑनेस्ट) यहां ‘h’ silent है.
4) यदि singular countable Noun किसी vowel से शुरू हो किन्तु उसका उच्चारण ‘व्यजंन जैसा हो, तो ‘a’ का प्रयोग किया जाता है, जैसेa one legged man, a one rupee note, a university
Use of ‘The’
1) When a singular countable noun is used for the first time in a sentence as a common noun,
then we use A/An. When the same ‘Singular Countable Noun’ is used again in the following sentences in the sense of a proper noun, then we use ‘the’, likeA nurse asked a question to a doctor.
The doctor did not understand the question, and asked the nurse to repeat her question.
2) जब किसी संपूर्ण जाति/प्रजाति का बोध कराना हो,
जैसे The deer runs fast. & The cow gives us milk.
3) Before superlative degree
The tallest boy in the class. The most disciplined student.
4) Before names of inventions (आविष्कार)
Who invented the gramophone?
5) जब adjective का प्रयोग plural बनाने अथवा पूरे वर्ग का बोध कराने हेतु किया जाए, जैसे
The educated will build the nation strong.
6) Before names of body partsHe hit me on the head.
7) Before names of Musical instruments Can you play the harmonium.
8) When a sentence is formed like (noun + of + noun) in an adjectival form (विशेषता बताने हेतु), The water of river Ganges is pure.
9) जब comparative degree के प्रयोग से selection (चुनाव) अथवा contrast (विभेद) का बोध कराना हो तो, Hari is the smarter of the two. Meena is the darker of the two.
10) की दर से की तौल से के हिसाब से आदि का बोध कराने हेतुCloth is sold by the metre.. & Milk is sold by the litre.
(11) निर्दिष्ट दिशा, वस्तु, या निर्दिष्ट व्यक्ति का बोध होने पर We are going to the North East.
